Brett Wilcoxen – NSU Men’s Golf
Good – Better – Best
The three adjectives are commonly used as a plan of action for the golf teams at Northeastern State University and have been the definition of the fairways and rough walked by Brett Wilcoxen as a member of the RiverHawks men’s golf program.
“I knew on my first visit, NSU was the right choice for me,” recalled Wilcoxen, a 2020 graduate from Owasso High School whose senior golf season was cancelled by the Covid pandemic. “But, because I didn’t follow coach Varner’s readiness plan before coming to Tahlequah, I redshirted by freshman year.”
“It was the wake-up call I needed to put me on the right track to not only improve my golf game but also get off to a good start on my academic responsibilities,” explained the current day captain of the RiverHawks men’s golf team and a double major, accounting and marketing student, who will graduate in May, 2025.
Working hard to play his way on to the NSU men’s golf scorecard, Wilcoxen has been part of four tournament championships and three NCAA golf tournament bids while enjoying the benefits of family support from his coach and teammates as well as with his professors in the classroom that helped Wilcoxen earn Academic All-American honors.
“My golf teammates are like a family, a group of brothers and sisters that do everything together. We work out together, practice and play golf together and we eat together. We’ve become friends for life,” said Wilcoxen with a voice of gratitude.
“Academically, NSU offers so many ways to connect with your professors as well as
other students in your classes. They all are committed to doing what’s best for the student.”
Defining himself as hard working and outgoing, Brett Wilcoxen is proud to have mastered a positive approach to golf and the challenges of everyday life afforded by his experiences while on the NSU campus.
“Good, Better, Best has become a reality for me because of what I’d call the connect ability advantage at NSU including a variety of educational opportunities on a beautiful campus where students and professors know you like family and are wired together to open the doors for success in life.”
