Poteau High School’s Addison Sockey
Sophomore golfer Addison Sockey is quickly carving out a place for herself in the Poteau High School girls golf program, combining a steady game with a thoughtful, hard‑working mindset.
Sockey, a 10th grader, said her biggest inspiration comes from home. “My family inspires me, they are always there for me in my ups and downs, and they always encourage me in every little thing,” she said. That support has helped her handle the challenges of high school golf and the grind of the season.
On the course, Sockey leans on a short game she trusts under pressure. Her favorite club is her putter, which she said “always saves me” when a hole gets tricky. She has focused much of her practice time on improving her iron play, working to give herself more birdie looks and easier up‑and‑downs. The work has paid off early this year, as she carded an 88 in her first tournament of the season, the lowest competitive round of her career.
Wolf Mountain, her home course, ranks as her favorite place to play, a layout she knows well and embraces as a testing ground for her game. Away from tournaments, she enjoys the team side of golf, especially the long bus rides that turn into bonding time with teammates. In the classroom, Sockey lists math as her favorite subject and said she has been fortunate to learn from many strong teachers along the way.
In her free time, Sockey likes to read, balancing the mental demands of golf with a quiet hobby. She also keeps an eye on the professional game, where LPGA star Nelly Korda is her favorite golfer “because she is the best,” Sockey said. Looking ahead, she said golf and athletics have already taught her one lesson she plans to carry into the future: nothing comes easy, and you have to work hard for everything you want.
