WESTVILLE HORNETS
BOYS
Coach: NICHOLAS YARBROUGH
23-24 Record: 9-15
The Westville Hornets are heading into the 2024 season with optimism and hope after showing signs of improvement last year. Coach Nicholas Yarbrough is confident in the progress his team has made, with several key players returning who are expected to take a significant step forward. “We return a lot of players from last year’s team and hope to build off the success we had,” Yarbrough said. “There are some players who didn’t play a lot last year that we are looking to step up and play a bigger role for our team. We like the progress we have made and are looking forward to the season!”
The Hornets have a mix of experienced players and new faces that should complement each other well as they look to make strides this year. Among the returning key players is Brock Hammer (6-1, Sr.), a versatile wing who can score at all levels and play tough defense. He averaged 11 points per game last season, along with 3.2 rebounds and 1.9 assists, and is expected to be a leader on both ends of the floor. Another player to watch is Uriah Sanchez (5-9, Sr.), a wing who was a key contributor last season, averaging 11.5 points and 2.8 rebounds per game. Sanchez is known for his scoring ability and will be relied on heavily to provide offense. In the backcourt, Adon Singleterry (5-7, Sr.) returns after averaging 4.7 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 3.7 assists. As the point guard, Singleterry’s ability to facilitate the offense and play tough defense will be vital for the Hornets’ success this season. Other key players that Coach Yarbrough is counting on include Gage Jacob (5-7, Sr.), a wing who averaged 2.7 points and 1.4 rebounds last season; Keenan Killer (6-3, Sr.), a post player who will look to contribute more this year; and Jimmy Collins (6-8, Sr.), a post presence who adds valuable height to the team. Trypp Stephenson (6-2, Sr.), a forward, also returns and will help provide depth in the frontcourt.
The team’s younger players are looking to make an impact as well. Lawson Meridith (6-4, Jr.) is a forward who has shown considerable growth and is expected to have a breakout season. Cody Hamor (5-8, Jr.), a wing, is another player who could see an increased role this year. Jason Lee (5-5, Jr.), a point guard, will be crucial in adding depth to the backcourt. Overall, the Hornets’ success this season will rely on their ability to develop chemistry, especially with several players stepping into larger roles. With the return of key veterans like Hammer and Sanchez, the Hornets have the tools to improve on last season’s record and challenge for a playoff spot.
