Tahlequah’s Jacob Tiger – Cross Country Spotlight – Presented by Local Bank

Jacob Tiger’s introduction to cross country was anything but voluntary. “I got into cross country in elementary school by being forced to try out by the coach,” he recalled with a laugh. Despite the rough start, Tiger has since become a standout for Tahlequah High School’s team.

Now the team’s top runner, Jacob embraces the responsibility of being the one to set the tone. “I’m our number one guy, so I have to set the standards on how hard we work and push the team.” His leadership is pivotal in maintaining the team’s tight-knit chemistry. “The team’s chemistry is good—we get along well and are like brothers,” he said, highlighting the bond that makes the group special.

Setting the bar high for himself and his teammates, Jacob is focused on both individual and team success. “My first goal is to help my team win state and hopefully win state individually. I haven’t run a race at a hundred percent yet,” he added, hinting at the potential still untapped as the season progresses.

Training for Jacob involves a balance of speed and endurance. “A typical week is speed workouts on the course Mondays and Wednesdays, and Tuesdays and Thursdays are for distance. Friday is pre-race,” he explained. This routine has helped him overcome obstacles, including a tough moment from his sophomore year when he lost his shoe at the start of a race. “I got hurt but still finished,” he said. Although he didn’t make all-state that year, his resilience paid off the following season when he earned the honor through hard work.

Off the track, Jacob enjoys cooking and traveling, but it’s running that has taught him valuable life lessons. He’s grateful to those who have supported him along the way, particularly his mom and God. “The biggest one is God for always being there for me and teaching me lessons through this journey as a runner.” Jacob’s plans after high school include running in college, though he remains uncommitted for now.

With a strong team behind him and personal goals in his sights, Jacob Tiger is focused on leading his team to victory.
