For Morris High School’s Elias Smith, the track and field season is more than just a competition—it’s the latest chapter in a journey that began years ago. A natural athlete and dedicated competitor, Smith has been honing his skills in the shot put and discus since the fourth grade, steadily growing into one of Morris’s most promising young throwers.
Now competing at the high school level, Smith’s combination of strength, focus, and technique has positioned him to make an impact for the Eagles this spring. Known as a multi-sport athlete with a disciplined approach to training, he brings an understanding of movement and mechanics that translates seamlessly into success in the throwing ring.
“Elias is a multi-sport athlete who has been competing in shot put and discus since he was a fourth grader,” said head coach Chance Johnston. “He has potential to make some noise in both events. It is going to come down to how quickly he transitions to using the heavier high school implements. There will be an adjustment period as he gets used to throwing against bigger, stronger athletes and adding weight to his form.”
That transition period will test not just Smith’s technique, but also his patience and mental toughness—qualities that have already become the hallmark of his athletic career. Having spent years developing form, balance, and timing, he now faces the challenge of mastering the heavier implements and competing against older, more experienced athletes.
Still, those who know Smith have little doubt about his ability to rise to the occasion. His steady improvement, coupled with his willingness to learn and adapt, makes him a competitor to watch as the season unfolds.
Whether in the shot-put circle or at the discus sector, Elias Smith represents the next wave of Morris track and field—a hardworking, determined athlete ready to make his mark at the high school level and beyond.
