Stilwell’s Ava Swafford – Track Spotlight – Presented by Stuteville Ford of Tahlequah

Ava Swafford’s love for running didn’t begin with medals or school competitions—it started with pure passion. “I have always been one to love running,” she said. “Everyone calls me weird because no matter the circumstance, I always want to run.” Though she started track in middle school, it wasn’t until seventh grade that something shifted. “That’s when something clicked, and I fell in love with the sport.”

When asked what first sparked her desire to run track, Ava doesn’t hesitate. “I have watched the Olympics for as long as I can remember and it just inspired me to do track,” she said. “Seeing those amazing athletes being able to pursue their dreams makes me want to work harder to pursue mine.” One particular Olympian stands out. “I feel as if my biggest influence has been Sydney McLaughlin. She is determined and dedicated to what she does and she’s an amazing role model for people to look up to.”

The support system surrounding Ava plays a major role in her success. “The team’s chemistry is very strong,” she said. “We all get along and make each other feel welcome. We’re all there for each other and support one another through everything.”

As for her role on the team? “My role on the team is to make sure everyone keeps their heads up,” she said. “No matter what happens I’m there to make sure they don’t get down. I make sure to always have a positive attitude even in the worst situations because being negative never helps anything.”

Ava has big goals for the season ahead. “I hope to place at state this year in the 300 hurdles and qualify for long jump,” she said. “I’m also looking forward to seeing the progress I make from where I started.”

Balancing her multiple commitments requires a lot of dedication. “I have a busy schedule of softball, so I normally get about one full day of training at the track,” she said. “I stay after softball practices and run.”

Through it all, Ava keeps her mindset steady and her work ethic strong. “Never give up and work hard,” she said. “Just because you don’t see results right away, doesn’t mean it’s not working.”
