Sallisaw High School’s Gage DeWayne Webb

Sallisaw High School junior golfer Gage DeWayne Webb has built his game on two simple lessons that guide him on and off the course, never give up and always do his best.

Webb, an 11th grader for the Black Diamonds, said his biggest inspiration comes from home. “My family,” Webb said. “They have been by my side no matter what I have decided to do and always tell me to do my best and to have confidence in myself.” That support has helped him grow into a steady presence for Sallisaw’s boys golf team.

In the classroom, Webb gravitates toward numbers. Math is his favorite subject, and he credits teacher Mrs. Barger with making it enjoyable and challenging at the same time. Away from school, he spends most of his time outdoors, whether he is playing golf, hunting and fishing, or just hanging out with friends.

On the course, Webb’s favorite club is his hybrid, a versatile option he trusts in a variety of situations. “It can be used just about anywhere,” he said. That reliability shows up in his scoring, including the day he carded a 70 at Choctaw Country Club in Poteau, the best round of his young career. “I had been playing a lot at that time and just had a real good day,” Webb said.

Choctaw Country Club is more than just a number on the scorecard for Webb. It is where he first learned to play, and it remains his favorite place to tee it up. “I like to play with all the guys there and have made some good friends,” he said.

Webb models parts of his game and mindset after his favorite golfer, Jordan Spieth, and he said he also admires the Texas golf program. Webb has poured most of his own practice into sharpening his short game, an area he knows can separate good rounds from great ones. As he continues his high school career, he plans to lean on his family’s encouragement, his teammates’ camaraderie and the lessons golf has taught him about perseverance.
