Poteau High School’s Garrison Whitworth

Poteau High School junior golfer Garrison Whitworth is proving that patience and hard work travel just as far as a well‑struck drive. A rising standout for the Pirates, Whitworth has built his game around consistency, composure and a genuine love for being around his teammates.

Now in the 11th grade, Whitworth balances his time between the course and the classroom, where he has found an unexpected favorite in Spanish I. He said he “surprisingly” enjoys the class and likes the teacher, a reminder that he brings an open mind to whatever challenge is in front of him. That approach shows up in tournament play, where he has already put together rounds most high school golfers only dream about.

Whitworth’s lowest score to date is a 66, fired during an Oklahoma Junior Golf Tour event at Page Belcher in Tulsa. “I could not miss a putt that day,” he said, recalling the round with a smile. That putting performance is no accident; Whitworth has recently made his short game the focal point of his practice routine, determined to “save strokes” around the green.

While he is capable of going low, Whitworth is quick to credit the people who helped him get there. He lists his parents at the top of his inspirations, noting how they teach him to be a good person and to always show kindness to others. Those lessons have shaped the way he carries himself on and off the course, where sportsmanship and attitude matter just as much as birdies and pars.

On the course, Whitworth’s favorite club is his mini‑driver, which he calls the most forgiving stick in his bag. He enjoys attacking layouts such as Dornick Hills and Kiva Dunes in Alabama, courses he describes as “very fun to play.” His favorite professional golfer is Bryson DeChambeau, whom he admires because he is fun to watch and has a great personality.

Away from competition, Whitworth likes to stay active by working out at the gym and spending time with friends. That sense of camaraderie carries over to the Poteau boys golf team, a group he says is tight‑knit and always has a great time together. “I enjoy my golf team because we are all friends and get along and always have a great time,” Whitworth said.

Looking ahead, Whitworth believes the lessons he is learning in golf will serve him well long after high school. “Athletics have taught me that hard work and patience will lead to good things,” he said, a mindset that should keep him on the right path no matter where the game takes him.
