Senior Gavin Gotes is making his final season at Panama High School one to remember. A standout basketball player, Gavin shines as the team’s point guard, a role he embraces with determination and focus. “Setting goals and trying my best to reach them motivates me,” Gavin says, underscoring his drive to push himself both on and off the court.
Gavin credits his family for being a constant source of inspiration. “My parents are my biggest influences,” he explains. “They’re always pushing me to be the best version of myself.” This encouragement has helped him stay focused and dedicated throughout his athletic career. He also recognizes the support of one teacher in particular who has made a lasting impact on his life. “Gayle Black has helped me a lot with schoolwork and is always there if I need her,” Gavin shares, appreciating the guidance that has extended beyond academics.
To Gavin, success in basketball stems from a combination of effort, learning, and teamwork. “It has taken hard work, learning from your mistakes and growing off of them, and developing a connection with your teammates to be successful,” he reflects. Some of his fondest memories include moments spent with his team off the court. “Going to the area tournaments and staying in hotels with the team has been a highlight of my career,” he says, cherishing the camaraderie that sports bring.
In addition to basketball, Gavin stays involved in school as a student officer, balancing academics, athletics, and leadership responsibilities. Impressively, he has also attended Carl Albert State College while still in high school, taking steps toward his future goals. “After high school, I plan to go to college and become a physical therapist,” Gavin says, aiming to build a career helping others.
Representing Panama High School and the surrounding community means a great deal to Gavin. “It means a lot getting to play for a great program,” he says, proud of the legacy he is leaving behind.
Gavin’s journey is one of hard work, resilience, and community pride. As he moves forward, he carries with him the lessons learned and the memories made, ready to achieve even greater things.
