Beggs High School’s Jerrett Hammer
Beggs High School senior Jerrett Hammer has grown up with a baseball in his hand and his dad in the stands, a bond that still fuels him every time he takes the field for the Demons. Hammer said his father’s love for watching him play when he was young continues to inspire him as he closes out his high school career.
In the classroom, Hammer lists biology as his favorite subject and points to Mrs. Fredrick as a teacher who has made a lasting impact on his education. He said the structure and discipline of school and sports together have helped shape his strong work ethic. “It taught me that not everything is easy and handed to you and you have to work for things in life,” Hammer said.
On the diamond, Hammer serves as both a pitcher and shortstop, embracing the mental and physical demands of each role. He said pitching is about having enough “guts and grit” to keep challenging hitters, while playing shortstop requires a short memory and the ability to quickly move on to the next play. His favorite unwritten rule in baseball is simple: don’t bunt to break up a no-hitter.
Hammer said he loves the memories and bond he has built with his teammates over the years. He enjoys the energy and positivity the group brings to the ballpark and points to teammate Dallas Wilson as a player who always has a good attitude and keeps the energy up. Away from baseball, Hammer enjoys spending his free time duck hunting.
At the plate, Hammer said his favorite pitch to hit is a low fastball, a pitch he looks for in big moments. As he finishes his senior year at Beggs, Hammer leans on the lessons from his family, classrooms and the ballfield, knowing the work ethic he has developed will carry him well beyond high school.
