Wagoner’s Kendra Condict – Tennis Spotlight – Presented by Kevin Grover GMC of Wagoner

KENDRA CONDICT-WAGONER

As the days of spring sports begin dwindling, so does the athletic career of Wagoner senior Kendra Condict who hopes to have another chance at winning tennis gold. Her tennis career at Wagoner has been highlighted by three trips to the state tournament so far in doubles competition. After qualifying in doubles her freshman and sophomore years, last year she began the season moving from doubles to singles competition until late in the season when coach Judy Penner decided to team her up with Kieley Holladay to play #2 doubles. That gamble proved to be successful as the duo finished second at state. This year the two are now playing #1 doubles and Penner acknowledges the road has been a little tougher.

“Kendra plays with confidence and really worked on her serve during the off season with the goal of getting more of her first serves in. She and Kieley won at the recent Tulsa Seven Tournament, and we went to Elk City and found the competition at little tougher and finished fourth and we’re seeing that #1 doubles in Class 4A is pretty loaded this year.”

Kendra played softball growing up but always had an eye on tennis as her older brothers both played.

“With both of them playing I think it finally motivated me to take up tennis so I could go out and beat them,” Kendra laughed. However, she didn’t start playing seriously until she was a freshman. “I just seem to be more natural at tennis and have more confidence. Doing well in softball has always been a lot harder for me.”

She doesn’t have to think very hard to pull up a favorite tennis memory.

“It was last year at state against Lincoln Christian. It was a long, three-hour match and we won so it was the best match ever.”

Condict is also busy off the court as a member of the National Honor Society, FCCLA, Native American Club, Mu Alpha Theta and is senior class president.

Kendra and Kieley still have a few dual meets and tournaments at Claremore and Sapulpa left before hoping to capture gold at the state tournament in May. After graduating this spring, Kendra plans to OU next year.
