Wagoner’s Bra’nya Coulter – Basketball Preview – Presented by The Locker Room

BRA’NYA COULTER-WAGONER

It’s a year that will require senior Bra’Nya Coulter to really step up to guide the Wagoner Lady Bulldogs. As the only senior on the team, her leadership will be crucial to the team’s success this year according to second-year coach Tony Rosebrough.

“We will be young this year. We have Bra’Nya and then the rest are sophomores and freshmen. Bra’Nya is a two-year starter and our leading scorer last year and we look for her to continue improving on those numbers this year. I think she’s become more vocal this year, and she’s always been able to shoot the ball well. She really worked hard in the off season by running track, playing summer ball and hitting the weights. I can tell her defense has improved a lot.”

Bra’Nya comes from an athletic family that featured cousins that played for Wagoner. In addition to basketball, she also grew up playing softball until she got to high school. As coach Rosebrough noted, she also ran track last year, taking part in the two-mile relay and just missed qualifying for state, finishing fourth at regionals. Bra’Nya started playing travel ball for Identity Elite on the Nike circuit during her freshman year and that team went to the national finals before losing out to a team from Alaska. Her travel ball experience played in part in one of her best sports memories at Wagoner.

“We played Berryhill in the Haskell Tournament last year and I had a 20-point game and it was a lot of fun because I knew a lot of the girls on the Berryhill team from travel ball,” said Bra’Nya who is also in the National Honor Society and the P7 club which is a Christian-oriented club that does Bible studies. “I learned a lot about leadership from the older players I’ve been around in school ball and travel ball. I think you have to use your voice as an authority but not to scream at them because sometimes that causes hard feelings with this generation. I consider myself to be nice person and I think just talking instead of screaming can make a big difference.”

Bra’Nya will continue her basketball career next year at Oklahoma Wesleyan University.
