TRENTON AND WESTON CUNNINGHAM-GORE
Gore High School coach T.W. Estes summed up the paradox of standout athletes and twins Trenton and Weston Cunningham.
“You don’t often see high school athletes that live and breath track but these two absolutely do. A lot of our track guys are just in it for conditioning for another sport, but track is a passion for Trenton and Weston.”
Both qualified for state last year as freshmen in the 110-meter hurdles with Weston placing seventh. They will again run that event as well as the 300-meter hurdles and some relay events. In addition to track, the guys also play football with Trenton being the quarterback or wide receiver and safety while Weston plays wide receiver and safety.
“Mom suggested getting into football when we were in third grade,” said Trenton. “We weren’t really sure about it at first, but I’ve really learned to love it.”
“Track came up in the seventh grade,” said Weston. “Trenton wanted to do it for conditioning, and I didn’t really want to, but he and mom talked me into it and once we did it, we really fell in love with it. I like being competitive and being at the top especially in the hurdles and I like the environment at track meets. Trenton added,” I like the athletes in track. It’s always competitive and there isn’t really the rivalry or drama among the athletes like there is some other sports.”
Moving from middle to high school can sometimes be a challenge but the twins found a program that helped with that.
“We went to a summer program after eighth grade which really helped us in track adjusting to the difference in the height of the hurdles between middle and high school,” said Trenton who said that growing up with a twin was pretty easy. “We were never really competitive with each other. We just pushed each other to get better.”
The goals for this track season are similar for both guys who are also members of the National Honor Society and in the Gore Gifted and Talented program.
“We want to win state or at least medal in the 110 hurdles and the 4X200 relay and qualify for state in the 300 hurdles,” said Trenton.
