Haskell High School’s Cheyanna Morgan
For Haskell High School senior Cheyanna Morgan, slow pitch softball has become the classroom where she learns the most about herself.
Morgan, a senior who primarily plays third base for the Lady Haymakers, said athletics has shaped how she approaches challenges on and off the field. “Athletics has taught me the true meaning of teamwork and leadership as well as the importance of never giving up on anything,” Morgan said. “Trusting the process is key.”
The hot corner is where Morgan feels most at home, even if it demands constant focus. In slow pitch, she mainly plays third base and occasionally shifts to the outfield. “The most difficult thing about third base is how hard the ball gets hit at me and the need for me to react quick, so I definitely have to stay on my toes,” she said.
At the plate, Morgan keeps it simple and team focused. She said her routine is less about mechanics and more about mindset. “My process at the plate is to get up there with a clear mind and do my job, whatever that may be that’s best for the team,” Morgan said.
Morgan has put together a three-year career batting average of .536, along with 51 home runs and 187 total RBIs, including a dominant junior season where she launched 23 home runs.
That unselfish approach extends to the dugout, where she embraces her role as a senior leader. Her favorite class is leadership, and she credits Coach Birch for helping her grow. “My favorite teacher is Coach Birch because he pushes me to be a better leader,” Morgan said.
Morgan said her mother is her biggest inspiration because “she always gives 100% in everything she does and never gives up.” Away from softball, Morgan tries to make the most of rare downtime by being with the people she loves. “In my free time, which is rare, I enjoy hanging out with my friends and spending time with my family,” she said. “We are all busy going in different directions, so it is nice when we get time just to be together.”
For Morgan, the game is about more than wins and losses. It is about laughs, leadership and the memories she is making in her final season at Haskell.
