“When I step on the court, I have a mindset to honor and glorify my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ with everything I do on the court,” said Porum freshman guard Glavin Garner, who is already making an impact for the Panthers. “I would like to be known for my faith. Also, as a great leader, student, and teammate.”
Garner said his focus this season centers on raising the bar for himself and his team. “To be a great leader and help my team reach our full potential,” he said of his personal goal. “The team morale has been great this year. We all get along and love to hangout. We just want to win and don’t care who gets the credit.”
The young point guard believes growth has shown most when games get tight. “The biggest improvement I’ve seen with this team so far is our composure,” Garner said. “As we get deeper in the season, we have been less rattled in tough games.”
Even with a youthful roster, the expectations are high. “Even as a young team, our goal is to make it to the state championship this season,” he said. “To achieve our goal we have a standard, and greatness is the standard. Which requires working hard in the classroom, weight room, and the gym.”
Garner embraces his role running the offense. “I play point guard,” he said. “When reading a defense, I look for advantages for me or my teammates.”
Preparation, he said, starts the night before tipoff. “I prepare by getting a good stretch and getting loose,” Garner said. “But it all starts with getting good sleep the night before.”
Faith and family are central to who he is becoming. “Some people may not know we pray as a team before every game,” he said. “My parents have impacted me the most. They have both taught me the values of having God in the center of my life. My dad has taught me to work hard and how to handle constructive criticism, while my mom has taught me how to love and treat others.”
Garner, who averages 14.1 points, 4.4 rebounds and 4 assists per game as a 5-foot-10 freshman, hopes to “attend college and play basketball at the next level” when his Porum career is done.
