PANAMA’S ROPER LOVELL – TRANSFER LEADER
By Michael Bray
The transfer portal gives as well as takes away. In 2026, Panama basketball got a gem when senior Roper Lovell transferred from Red Oak for his final season.
Since stepping on the court for the Razorbacks, the senior guard continues to average 11 points and six rebounds per game.
““He’s a kid that does all the right things, taking care of his class work, puts the work in at the gym and is always on time and never misses a chance to improve,” said head coach Wes Tackett. “Roper probably doesn’t get enough credit for just doing things the right way. I’m very lucky to coach such a great young man. He’s been nothing but a positive impact for Panama basketball.”
Shooting hoops has always been Lovell’s favorite sport.
“I’m a team-first player who enjoys seeing my teammates succeed,” he said. “I love every part of the game. My drive comes from my passion for basketball, my faith, and playing for the guys around me.”
One big challenge for Lovell was adjusting to a new school, coaches and teammates when he joined the Panama program. “It pushed me to grow both as a player and as a person,” he said. “I had to step out of my comfort zone and be willing to learn. Everyone has been very welcoming and I focused on working hard and staying committed.”
That commitment paid dividends. During the 94th LeFlore County basketball tournament, Roper was awarded the Coach’s Hustle award after earning postseason football awards as well.
“I played football for the first time this year and really enjoyed it,” he said. “I earned All-District honors at safety and I also play baseball and have started in centerfield.”
In his free time Roper enjoys hunting deer, ducks and coons. He added that his favorite food is ribeye steak while his favorite restaurant is Fuji’s.
In his personal life, he holds high esteem for his parents.
“My role models are my dad and my mom. My dad has taught me the importance of faith, hard work and always improving,” said Lovell. “Mom inspires me because of her work ethic, kindness and being an all around great person.”
He added that his father is also his main inspiration.
“He pushes me to be the best I can be and reminds me there’s always something to work on every day.”
Roper’s future plans are to own a HVAC company and having a world renowned coon hunting kennel.
He also said being successful, building a strong family, and providing a good life for them is a big dream. But for now, leading Panama to the state tournament is a goal he wants to achieve this season.
“I have to work hard every day, lead by example, play unselfishly, and make the right plays.”
