MORRIS, Okla. — Morris sophomore Landon Martin is focused on more than box scores as he takes the field for the Eagles this season. The 6-foot, 145-pound multi-sport athlete said his goals center on leadership and example-setting for his teammates and younger players in the program.
“To be the greatest I can for the team, improve in being a leader for my teammates,” Martin said. “I want to be a positive role model not only to the ones I have been playing with, but for the freshmen that will be coming in.”
Martin said the team enters the season with confidence and a strong sense of togetherness. “We are pretty confident, excited for the season and ready to play,” he said. “We are working together and keeping each other accountable.”
That accountability, he added, is the group’s defining trait. “Our biggest strength is accountability,” Martin said. “We have a lot of players that we stick up for each other and keep each other going on the right track on and off the field including the classroom.”
Martin’s versatility makes him a key contributor at several spots defensively. “I play primarily centerfield and then relief pitcher and first base,” he said. His game-day routine reflects a mature approach to preparation. “Before a game I put my headphones on, clear my head to focus on the game, stretch, work arm bands, and will work on some tee work with one hand swings,” he said.
Baseball has been a constant for Martin since early childhood. “I have played baseball since I was three, so I just go onto the field and do what I have always practiced doing,” he said.
Already a first-team all-district centerfielder as a freshman, Martin juggles baseball, football and track along with serving as the Cheer Eagle mascot, playing golf, fishing, helping with youth little league football and taking part in FCA. Looking ahead, he hopes to play college baseball and study construction engineering, but he wants to be remembered at Morris for his perseverance.
“I want my legacy to be that I never gave up,” Martin said. “No matter what our record ends up being, our team never gives up, and we always go back out there to play.”
