KYLER MCGEE READY TO HIT
By Michael Bray
If there is one attribute in baseball that any athlete needs, it’s dependability. For the Gore Pirates, they have that in Kyler McGee.
“He is always in the right spots and takes pride in doing the “little things” right and will do whatever is needed to ensure team success,” said Pirates head coach Tyler Lewis. “Kyler is one of the hardest working players on our team. He is extremely coachable, and willing to do whatever is needed to help our team win. Kyler leaves no doubt when it comes to his competitiveness and desire to make his team better.”
McGee, who also plays basketball as a guard, stated that the desire to play is preparing him for challenges in the future. There is one big hurdle though that he has had to overcome.
“I had to overcome my lazy mentality,” McGee said. “I got into the gym with a couple friends that are holding me accountable.”
One of his best memories so far is when he and his team played at Bricktown Stadium in Oklaoma City.
When he’s not on the diamond, Kyler enjoys spending time outside in nature and hunting. In the future he wants to be a pharmacist.
McGee said that his grandparents are who he looks up to in life.
“They are my role models because they love everybody and have never met a stranger,” he said. “I hope I could just be half as loving as them.”
If you ask coach Lewis, Kyler is on the right track to being like his grandparents.
“As a person, Kyler is smart, caring, and always has a positive attitude. He’s a good friend to his teammates.,” said Lewis.
For the season McGee has some lofty, but certainly not unachievable goals.
“Personally, I would like to have an average over .300 hitting and as a team, I want us to make it to state,” he said. And he has a plan of action to accomplish this.
“I could go and hit at the batting barn at least four days a week and hope that the rest of my team sees that and joins me,” he said. “I think that my clear headedness is a big asset to my team. It helps me not to overthink my past mistakes and focus on the next play.”
Coach Lewis agreed.
“Kyler’s biggest key for helping our team success is to step into a bigger role offensively,” Lewis added. “We are going to need him to provide more offensive power at the plate, and he has put in lots of work in the offseason to ensure that is possible.”
