Sallisaw’s Aniya Gasaway – Band Spotlight – Presented by Selah Salon

Some students discover their passion by accident, but for Sallisaw High School senior Aniya Gasaway, her musical path revealed itself the very first time she picked up an instrument. “I first got involved in sixth grade and I chose my instrument because I was the best at that instrument when I tried out for all of the other instruments,” she said. That early confidence helped launch a journey that has carried her through all four years of high school band.

Staying in band came naturally once Aniya realized what the program meant to her. “I like the feeling of being a part of a group and we’re all like a family,” she said. That sense of belonging has shaped her entire experience, strengthened by the people who have guided her along the way. “I would say Mr. Moore, the woodwind director,” has been the biggest influence on her musical journey.

One of Aniya’s favorite parts of being in the Sallisaw marching band is the people she shares it with every day. “I would say it’s meeting all of my friends and companions in band and also the directors,” she said. That connection defines the group’s identity. “I would say it’s funny and very friendly.”

The memories she’s made are just as meaningful. “I would say it all of our trips,” she said when asked for her favorite one. Representing Sallisaw each time she performs brings a sense of accomplishment. “It feels like a huge accomplishment.”

As a musician, Aniya has grown in ways that still impress her. “I think being able to perform in big crowds.” She’s taken on challenging music as well. “Cajun Folk Song,” she said, naming the hardest piece she’s played.

When it comes to preparation, Aniya keeps things simple. “I just make sure I’m ready and I don’t get too worried about it.”

Teamwork is a major part of her role in the band. “I would say it’s really important and I incorporate by knowing my music and practicing.” She’s also learned a powerful lesson from those around her: “I’ve learned to work hard, and it doesn’t matter how well you do, it’s about the time that you had.”

As she looks ahead, Aniya carries with her years of teamwork, dedication, and the joy of music—memories she’ll keep long after the final note.
