If Oklahoma high school football had a Heisman Trophy award, Vian senior Masyn Wright would certainly be in the running. The VYPE TOP 100 performer has rushed for over 4000 yards in his career as a Wolverine including 2145 yards last year, tops in the state, while accounting for 36 touchdowns as Vian went to the state finals in Class 2A-II. “I think he’s the best running back in the state,” said his coach, Gary Willis. “He’s become more vocal his senior year, but he prefers to lead by example with his play and work ethic. I know that when teams prepare to play us, they’re focused on what to do about Masyn. He makes big time plays look common.” Wright comes from a family that’s big on football which has inspired Masyn along the way. “I watched my older cousins and brothers play and that really made me want to play too. My cousin, Tuk Moses, was a really good player and one of my main role models.” With a lot of memories and highlights to pick from in his career, Wright paused to consider when asked, but Willis chimed in with a couple that he remembers well, “In the state semifinals last year against Colcord, Masyn dominated both sides of the ball and we had that game in hand by half time. Another one I remember was his freshman year when we played Washington in the season opener and he had a great game even though we lost, but it showed what kind of player he was going to be.” The Wolverines have advanced a little further in the playoffs each year that Wright has been there but without a doubt this year’s goal for coach and player alike is to bring the gold ball back to Vian. Along the way there are a couple of games that Masyn has his sights set on. “I’m looking forward to the Pocola game this year because I know a couple of guys on that team and they’re already doing some talking and Eufaula always plays us tough.” The college offers are coming in for Masyn and so far, New Mexico, North Texas and Emporia State are high on his list with more sure to come.
