Stilwell’s Emma Sam – Volleyball Spotlight – Presented by Tommy Nix Auto Group

For senior Emma Sam, volleyball has been an unexpected but welcome passion. “This is actually my first year playing organized volleyball,” Sam said. “I started playing this summer and just fell in love with it.”

Part of what makes this journey special for her is sharing it with the people closest to her. “I enjoy being able to be a part of a new program with my friends,” she said.

Her introduction to the sport came through someone who believed she could succeed. “My trainer, Adam Carter, has been my biggest volleyball influence,” Sam said. “He introduced me to it and encouraged me to give it a try. He’s taught me so much and has really helped me improve my skills and confidence.”

While the program is still developing, Sam sees progress every time the Lady Indians take the floor. “Our team chemistry is something we work on, and it grows every game,” she said. “It’s not the strongest but I think that is something that comes with the program being so new.”

Wearing Stilwell across her jersey brings pride and responsibility. “Representing Stilwell means a lot to me,” Sam said. “I know I need to have good sportsmanship and do my best for my team and school.”

As one of the older players, she embraces her role beyond the net. “As a senior, I feel I have to be a good example for my teammates and a leader that is willing to help wherever I can,” she said.

That leadership also shows up in how she handles setbacks. “Honestly, my attitude is my biggest challenge,” Sam said. “Once things don’t go as planned, I start to get down on myself. I’m overcoming this more and more every game. I’m learning to shake off my mistakes during the game and work on those things in practice.”

Through 18 games this season, Sam has already made her presence known with 41 aces, 52 tips, 42 blocks, 21 passes, 17 assists, and 46 hits.

Her favorite memory so far? “Playing well in my first game and being added as a varsity starter,” she said.

Sam has her eyes on the future as well. “It would be a dream to play in college,” she said. “I’ve had a couple of programs reach out but I don’t think I’ve found the one.”
