NSU’s Cameron McCollock – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Northeastern State University

On the pitch or strolling across campus at Northeastern State University, what you see is what you get from RiverHawks men’s soccer goalkeeper, Cameron McCollock.

“I’m calm, open and easy going,” said the 2023 Union High School graduate.  “I’m not going to talk your ear off; I just let my actions say what needs to be said.”

Following a redshirt season as a freshman, McCollock saw limited action during the 2024 campaign before securing his place on the RiverHawks starting lineup this fall standing tall between the pipes protecting the net.

During the 2025 schedule, his recent play that included back-to-back shutouts earned McCollock recognition as the Great American/Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Goalkeeper of the Week. McCollock recorded nine saves while facing 26 shots as part of the two matches including a six-save effort in action against Lubbock Christian.

In soccer, just like in everyday life, McCollock points to the importance of communication in order to achieve happiness and success.

“Soccer teaches you how to deal with negatives, many just like the challenges you face in life. As a goalkeeper, you have to remain alert and communicate with your teammates, continuously encouraging them while trying to help our team avoid conflict to achieve success,” said McCollock. “That’s why the day after a match, I’ve pretty much lost my voice.”

It’s that same type of communication that McCollock defines as a bonus for students trying to find the pathway to success at Northeastern State University including the student-teacher relationships.

“From the start I’ve enjoyed the on-campus environment. Student life is really good and everyone seems to get along,” explained the Sports Management major. “In the classroom, communication is a two-way street. My professors are great. Whenever I have a question, I always get a response that fulfills a teaching/learning moment. Everyone at NSU wants to see you succeed.”
