2025 Arkoma Mustangs Football Preview – Presented by Indian Capital Technology Center

ARKOMA MUSTANGS

Coach: JACK ARMSTRONG

5-5

OFFENSE

It’s the second time around as head coach of the Mustangs for Jack Armstrong who spent the last three seasons as the defensive coordinator at Heavener. Coming in with him as a transfer is his son Alex (6-0, 145, Sr.) who played multiple positions last year at Heavener and will likely get the nod at quarterback for the Mustangs in 2025. Returning for Arkoma is the versatile Scout Smith (6-0, 155, Sr.), a VYPE TOP 100 nominee, who ran for 575 yards, passed for 506 yards, had 125 receiving yards and was part of 17 touchdowns last year. “Scout will be four-year starter for us who is a great all-around athlete that can play multiple positions. He will be a key part of our offense and defense again this year,” said Armstrong. The new head coach will base the offense out of the spread but will mix blocking assignments to try to create mismatches and will utilize the read option in both the passing and running game. Anchoring the line for the skill guys will be Salvador Vargas (5-10, 300, Sr.), Jacob Edgar (5-8, 225, So.) who may end up himself in a skill position, and Brant Chesher (6-2, 250, So.) who started last year as a freshman and who Armstrong expects to have a breakout season.

DEFENSE

Vargas and Chesher will anchor the D-line in Armstrong’s 2-3 defense. “We’ll be looking to match up to what the offense is looking to do and take it away,” said the head coach. “We can create pressure from a lot of different angles by aligning this way and it also puts one more athlete on the field to help create a situation where we can rotate our linemen and keep them fresh.” Smith and Armstrong will hold down the fort in the secondary, along with Kingston Farrar (5-8, 145, Sr.). As the Mustangs adjust to a new head coach and quarterback, they should benefit from having two of their first three games at home.
