Keys’ Treveon Guthrie – Football Spotlight – Presented by Local Bank

Some athletes are driven by stats, others by accolades—but for Treveon Guthrie of Keys High School, his drive comes from something deeper. “My mindset when stepping onto the field on either side of the ball is to stay calm, remember my reads, and just give full effort on every play to glorify my savior Jesus,” Guthrie said. That purpose fuels his every step, every catch, and every rep in the weight room as he prepares for his senior season.

With the new year approaching fast, Guthrie has his eyes on personal and team goals alike. “My personal goals heading into this season are to attract college offers throughout my senior season and be the best leader I can be for my team,” he said. And to accomplish that, he knows it starts with the work in the offseason. “Our team has had a much better offseason in the weight room than I’ve seen in the past few years as well as us getting together and learning more football knowledge.”

That renewed commitment has already started to pay off. “I believe our biggest improvement so far as a team is everyone knowing where to be and knowing their assignments offensively and defensively,” Guthrie noted. The end goal is clear: “As a team we want to win our district and in turn, make the playoffs.”

Guthrie, who plays both wide receiver and safety, knows the little things make the biggest difference. “In my opinion, reading a defense starts by watching film before you step on the field to figure out the tendencies of the defense,” he explained. “On the field as a WR, I like to look at the leverage of the safety or linebacker that’s covering to determine how I want to run my route.” And if he’s in for a heavy workload? “I like to keep my week pretty consistent… maybe just get an extra ice bath in the days leading up to the game and make sure I’m hydrated.”

Through it all, Guthrie hopes to leave behind more than touchdowns. “I would want to be remembered as someone that had extraordinary determination in everything he did and a loving, God-fearing young man.”

Treveon Guthrie plans to continue his football career while pursuing a degree in sports medicine or poultry science.
