Morris Eagles – Football Preview – Presented by Mabrey Bank

Coach: JIMMY WHITLOCK

0-10

The Morris Eagles find themselves in that inevitable cycle of senior-laden team to inexperience as they welcome new coach Jimmy Whitlock. After going 5-5 in 2023, Morris found itself on the short end of the experience cycle last year suffering through a winless season. Though still young going into 2025, there is a little more experience going for them this year. “We are a young team that is looking to make improvements each week and turn this program around,” said Whitlock. Two of the skill positions will be filled with returning starters who gained a lot of playing time and crucial experience last year in quarterback Landon Martin (6-1, 140, So.) and running back Grant Clay (5-10, 175, Jr.). “Landon started multiple games at quarterback last year and is looking forward to leading a multiple formation spread offense to success this year,” said Whitlock. The offensive line will be the strength of the offense with returning starters Dre Lewis (5-10, 185, So.), Joseph Wind (6-3, 360, Sr.), Rowan Ramirez (5-10, 205, So.) and Isaiah Taylor (6-1, 270, Sr.), A VYPE TOP 100 nominee who the new coach is high on. “Isaiah is a four-year starter who really moves well for a big man and will play on both sides of the ball. He’s not on anybody’s radar yet but I expect him to have the kind of year that will change that.”

DEFENSE

Whitlock will move to a 3-4 defensive set this year and will have some good experience in the front line to hopefully keep offenses in check with Lewis, Wind, Taylor and Jarrett West (6-0, 260, Sr.) rotating up front. Clay will return at linebacker with a year’s experience under his belt. “Grant has been a leader during the off season and spring football. He leads by example but can also be vocal and never misses a workout,” said Whitlock. Martin will be the stopper in the secondary at strong safety. “Our goal is to play solid base defense and periodically blitz,” said Whitlock.  With a year of experience under their belts, this still young team will hopefully find their footing a little more in 2025.
