Joe Green recently won the statewide vote for Fan’s Choice Mr. Basketball Oklahoma. VYPE wanted to help you get to know him better!
VYPE: What grade are you in?
Joe: I am a junior at Keys High School.
VYPE: What has it taken to be successful as an athlete?
Joe: Staying in the gym and staying motivated to do what I’ve always done.
VYPE: What has been the highlight moment of your career?
Joe: I got conference MVP and was also selected for the VYPE top 100.
VYPE: What does it mean to you to represent your school and community when you play?
Joe: My school and community mean a lot to me. Keys is a little town with supportive people all around for everything all the parents and people just go, even if they don’t have kids playing a sport. Their coming to show support means a lot to me, and I really appreciate everyone who supports the Keys school/community.
VYPE: What does it take to balance your school work and the activities you are involved in?
Joe: It takes a lot to balance school and sports, but I always got told if you just finish your work when you’re in school hours, you get to be in the gym more throughout the day after school.
VYPE: Who are some of your biggest influences or role models?
Joe: My sister, because she used to play basketball and was good, and watching her play and just being as dominant as she was, she wasn’t known for being a scorer, but her defense, rebounding, and hustling. She is forever gonna be my biggest influence and role model.
VYPE: What teacher has had the biggest impact on your life?
Joe: My freshman year English teacher, Mrs. Stilwell, has had the most impact on my life. She’s like my other mom, she always makes sure I’m okay, not just on the court but off the court too. She has always been around and by my side since my freshman year, and I appreciate her a lot for everything she has done.
VYPE: Is there an opponent that you enjoy beating the most?
Joe: I enjoy beating any of my friends from other schools that we play during the season.
VYPE: Which teammate do you enjoy working against the most in practice?
Joe: Jacob Kirk is one of our freshmen; he is gonna be a sophomore next year. I enjoyed going against him because he is a fast little guard and good at defense and is a good shot creator.
VYPE: Who is the least appreciated player on your team?
Joe: The least appreciated is probably Benton Martin or Dalton Foster. Benton is a big, strong physical post player and hustles a lot, and Dalton is one of our best defenders and another player who hustles a lot.
