Muskogee’s Ella Wilson – Golf Spotlight – Presented by David Kolb State Farm Insurance

ELLA WILSON-MHS

Playing golf for Muskogee High School was kind of an accident for senior Ella Wilson.

“I first tried golf in seventh grade but after a couple of weeks decided it wasn’t for me,” said Ella. “But after the volleyball season my freshman year, me and some friends were looking for another sport to play and coach (Brad) Huddleston talked us into trying golf again and I really liked the cute outfits they wore so I decided to give it another try,” she laughed.

Ryan Dvorak has since taken over the duties of golf coach and is impressed with the progress Ella has made over the years.

“Ella and her friends came to us her freshman year and decided to learn the game of golf from the ground up and Ella has improved dramatically as she’s moved through high school. She qualified for the state tournament last year as an individual and this year she is playing the number one bag for us and has two top 10 finishes so far.”

Cute outfits aside, Ella credits the improvement in her game to having a good mindset.

“Golf is such a mental game and early on I let mistakes really get into my head and I didn’t listen well and wasn’t very coachable. I think taking on a more positive mindset and listening to my coaches plus practice have been the keys to my improvement,” said Wilson.

Making the state tournament last year was a big highlight for Ella but not because of the golf itself.

“At state I was complimented by several coaches about my positive attitude and how I was able to help other girls keep a good mindset and that was big for me in that I was able to glorify God while I was playing since He is the main motivator in my life.”

Outside of golf, Ella is extremely busy. She is in the National Honor Society, FFA, Student Life Council, Superintendent’s Advisory Council, the science and ecology clubs, Fostering Hope and a leader in her youth group at church.

This year Ellas goals are to shoot below 95 in at least one tournament and qualify for state again. She plans to attend OSU next year and study some kind of engineering.
