PAIZLEY ROMINE
WAGONER HIGH SCHOOL
There are only two girls on the Wagoner High wrestling team right now, but coach Micco Charboneau is hopeful that the success of sophomore Paizley Romine will grow the program in the near future.
“Paizley reminds me of Lexi Miller who was a two-time state champ and a pioneer of girls’ wrestling here at Wagoner,” said Charboneau. “She’s a hard worker who is always there when the wrestling room is open or is wrestling at a tournament somewhere.”
And she’s been doing a pretty good job of wrestling at those tournaments. She’s a three-time champion at the Memphis Nationals, a two-time Missouri Nationals champ, a seven-time All American and she’s only been at it for about four years. For Paizley wrestling is a family affair.
“My grandpa was a high school state champ, my great grandpa was a two-time NCAA champ, and my grandma was involved in the WWF. I was a little hesitant about getting into wrestling, but grandpa talked me into trying it and here I am. It was a struggle at first in club wrestling and it wasn’t until about the third tournament I was in that I won my first match and then I got into school wrestling in middle school and started winning a lot more.”
She played basketball and softball growing up and still plays soccer, but wrestling is by far her favorite.
“I’d be so sad if I had to quit,” she laughed.
Paizley noted the aforementioned Lexi Miller was someone who really opened her eyes to wrestling.
“I worked with Lexi a couple of time and she really opened wrestling up for me.”
So far, she is undefeated this year and staying that way is one of her main goals as she works to make it to the state tournament for the second straight year with her long range goal being to become a three time state champ.
