Okemah Lady Panthers Basketball Team

OKEMAH LADY PANTHERS

GIRLS

Coach: GARY KENNEMER

23-24 Record: 22-7

The Okemah Lady Panthers are ready for a promising season as they return three key starters from last year’s successful campaign, including several experienced upperclassmen and some new talent that will make them a formidable team in 2024. Under the leadership of head coach Gary Kennemer, the Lady Panthers look to build on last year’s success, which included a strong playoff run, and aim to make another deep state tournament appearance this season. “We return three starters who were leaders in scoring and rebounding, along with our top four substitutes from last year,” Kennemer said. “We also added two outstanding guards who moved in. Our team quickness and speed will be an asset. We had a great summer and are looking to build on last year’s state tournament team.”

The Lady Panthers will be led by senior guard Elaine Berryhill (5-5, Sr.), who has developed into one of the team’s most dynamic players. Last season, Berryhill averaged 13 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists per game and is expected to play a critical role once again. As she approaches the 1,000-point club, Berryhill’s leadership will be key to the team’s success. Another significant contributor is senior forward/center Raven Deer (5-10, Sr.), who averaged 12 points, 10 rebounds, and 2 blocks last season. Deer’s presence in the paint will provide stability and rebounding strength, and she will be an important part of the team’s defensive efforts. Senior forward/guard Merenda Switch (5-6, Sr.) is also a key player, contributing 9 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 assists per game, and will help stretch the defense with her shooting ability. In addition to the returners, the Lady Panthers welcome some exciting newcomers, including junior guard Kinley Thompson (5-5, Jr.). Thompson, who moved to Okemah from Pawnee, adds scoring ability and athleticism to the team. She averaged 16 points, 3 rebounds, and 7 assists last season and is expected to be a top performer this year.

Freshman guard Savannah Switch (5-5, Fr.) has also shown great promise, with her ball-handling skills and defensive abilities, making her one to watch in the upcoming season. Coach Kennemer believes that the team’s overall depth will be a significant strength, and with several players capable of contributing offensively and defensively, the Lady Panthers are poised for a successful season. The leadership of Berryhill, along with the presence of Deer, Thompson, and other key players, will help guide Okemah toward another successful season.
