HASKELL HAYMAKERS

GIRLS

Coach: Kyle Ward

23-24 Record: 8-17

Haskell coach Kyle Ward thinks that even though his team is young with just three seniors, they’ll be a team that will surprise some folks in 2024.

“While we may be young, our athleticism and energy are off the charts,” said Ward. “This group has a lot of potential and I believe they’ll surprise a lot of people. It’s going to be s fun season to watch as we grow and develop together.”

The two seniors expected to help make things go for the Haymakers are point guard Hayden Ward and guard Layla Markou.

“Hayden has started three of her four years here and expertly runs the offense and excels defensively, make her a formidable presence on the court. Last year she shot 35 percent from three-point land and averaged nine points a game. She is a smart, aggressive passer, consistently finding open teammates to create opportunities. She is a respected team leader that everyone loves to play along side and is a star in the classroom as well with a 4.0 GPA,” said Ward. “Layla is the unsung hero of our team. Her relentless motor and unwavering dedication shine through every day on the court. She is a defensive specialist that constantly challenges opposing teams, making it difficult for them to find a rhythm. She also excels in the classroom with a 4.0 GPA making her an incredible leader both on and off the court.”

Juniors Natalee Deckard and Akeelah Anderson are stars of the future according to Ward.

“Their dedication and relentless work ethic set them apart and their commitment to improving every day is truly inspiring. As they continue to hone their skills, I have no doubt they will shine in the coming years, so keep an eye on these two talented athletes.”

Ward also had high praise for a pair of up-and-coming sophomores in Ava Draper and Madison Humphrey.

“Both of these girls are incredibly athletic and have a keen understanding of their roles on the team which makes them valuable assets. Their ability to score and contribute offensively will be crucial as they continue to develop and have an impact on the team,” said Ward.

The Haymakers have a lengthy roster which will foster depth for this year and seasons to come as well as provide competition for the starters. Senior Anna Mollenberg and junior Cheyanna Morgan will provide immediate depth while sophomores Kannon Lawley and Ni’Kyah Hutchinson along with freshmen Alaysia Lang, Ebony Draper, Mia Pearson, Alaina Bunch, Evie Bonebrake, Rayleigh Moats, Genisis Diaz, Gniry Alston and Landon Jordan will all battle for some playing time.
