ARKOMA MUSTANGS
Coach: KATHEN FUNBERG
2-8
OFFENSE
The Mustangs return a wealth of experience and “will have a nice balance of size and speed” as they compete in Class B-2 this season. Scout Smith (6-1, 140, Jr.) was an All-District selection one year ago and looks to have another explosive year after catching 33 passes for 481 yards and four touchdowns. “[Smith] has long range as a wide receiver and will win every 50-50 ball,” head coach Kathen Funberg said. Arkoma’s offense will line up in the spread with no huddle to fully utilize Smith, the receiving corps, and the arm talent of Cody Morales (5-10, 200, Sr.), who completed over half of his passing attempts last year and rushed for three touchdowns. “We are going to utilize a variety of motions to help with the run and passing game. ‘Attack and play fast’ will be our motto.” Jimmy Culbreath (6-0, 140, Sr.) and Dakota Lanham (5-10, 270, So.), who scored four times from the backfield last year, will star with Smith at receiver and Cayson Chambers (5-11, 165, So.) will be the team’s feature back after he carried the ball 48 times last year and received district honorable mention.
DEFENSE
Culbreath will lead the team’s defense in a new role. Last year, he tallied 62 tackles, six tackles for loss and three interceptions. “Culbreath will be moving to middle linebacker because of his aggressiveness, open-field tackling and ability to go sideline-to-sideline.” The Mustangs will throw multiple looks at opposing offenses with flexibility in its base. “We will be aggressive and bring pressure often,” Funberg said. Smith, who also picked off three passes last year, will play a pivotal role in Arkoma’s secondary along with Lanham, Chambers and Tyler Lewis (5-9, 160, Jr.). Brian Flurry (5-7, 160) caused opposing lines fits with 27 tackles at interior last year. He will play alongside Keith Niles (5-9, 170, Jr.).
