Success in softball often comes down to what happens after failure, and for Abi Cloud, that lesson can be summed up in two words: four seconds.
Cloud, a member of the Class of 2028 at Mounds Public Schools, stays busy year-round competing in fast-pitch and slow-pitch softball, powerlifting, basketball and track and field. Still, softball remains the sport closest to her heart, shaping not only the athlete she is becoming, but the person she is off the field.
One of Cloud’s proudest athletic moments came when she was named an all-conference softball player, recognition that validated the hours of work she has poured into her game. But accolades are only part of her story. The biggest lessons have come through adversity.
“The main thing softball has taught me is that no matter how much you want to win, you can’t make everybody want it the same way,” Cloud said. “You also can’t put too much pressure on yourself or take on too much responsibility because softball is a sport designed to make you fail.”
That mindset has become central to how she approaches competition. Mistakes are inevitable, but dwelling on them only makes the next play harder.

“You only have four seconds to get over your mistake,” Cloud said. “Then you have to move on and play harder.”
That philosophy was reinforced by former teammate Kyle Sanders, a senior who graduated last year but left a lasting impact on Cloud. Sanders modeled relentless effort and steady encouragement, no matter the circumstances.
“She always gave everything she had on the field,” Cloud said. “No matter how she played or what was going on, she lifted people up. Whether you were a freshman or a senior, she treated everyone the same and brought energy to the team.”
Cloud sees that same sense of family in her hometown. Her favorite place in Mounds is the softball complex, where she spends more time than almost anywhere else.
“Our softball team is like family,” Cloud said. “People graduate and new people come in, but we all hold the rope for each other.”
Outside athletics, Cloud participates in Fellowship of Christian Athletes and P7, a Christian prayer ministry for students at school and attends Mounds First Baptist Church on Wednesday nights.
She credits much of her growth to two people: her mother and Coach Smith. Their support, guidance and belief in her continue to fuel the passion she brings to the game every day.
