Cameron’s Jaxon Adcock – Baseball Spotlight

CAMERON’S JAXON ADCOCK

Without a doubt, Jaxon Adcock is getting enthusiastic over the upcoming Cameron spring baseball season.

The junior is seeking to carry over his success from the Yellowjackets’ fall season, as well as the previous spring, in which they made the state tournament on both occasions.

“I’m excited for the upcoming season because I feel like we have a good shot at winning it all now that we’ve got some experience as a team in the state tournament,” Adcock said. “My goal for the season is to go back to state and win it this time.

“I’ve really been focused this offseason on getting bigger and stronger by staying consistent in the gym and working to put on muscle.”

This past fall, Adcock batted .577 along with an on-base percentage of .651 and a 1.042 slugging percentage. He had five home runs along with 29 RBIs.

Last spring, he hit .500 and homered seven times.

Adcock, who has been a starter since his freshman season, primarily plays shortstop but also pitches. In his spring campaign as a sophomore, Adcock turned in a 3.04 earned run average.

“I would say I’m a dependable pitcher,” Adcock said. “I like to fill up the zone and let my defense work behind me. I can throw a fastball, curveball and slider.”

But when given a choice as to what he likes the best, pitching or hitting, Adcock definitely prefers offense.

There are some other intangibles that he brings to the table.

“I would say some of my strengths would be my IQ on the field,” he said. “I’ve been very blessed to learn from some very intelligent people, and everything they have taught me has helped me develop a good feel for the game.”

While Adcock definitely likes the competition and the strategy that comes with baseball, he transmits his love of the sport as part of other outlets. For instance, he utilizes baseball as an extension of his faith.

“My favorite thing about baseball is that it gives me the opportunity to meet so many new people and use the platform it’s given me to share my faith in Jesus with those people,” Adcock said.

Adcock already has received attention for his baseball prowess, and one of the state’s top college programs has taken notice. He has committed to play at the University of Oklahoma.

While he already has his future baseball plans mapped out beyond high school, Adcock is still contemplating what he wants to do on the academic side of things.

However, he has another number that is just as impressive as anything he’s done on the diamond, as Adcock possesses a sparkling 4.0 grade-point average.

“I’m not entirely sure what I want to study yet, but I’m leaning towards something in business,” Adcock said.

Before he decides on a major, not to mention getting the chance to don the Sooners’ crimson and cream, there’s still some more memories Adcock wants to create while at Cameron. Getting to play in the state tournament in both the spring and fall seasons has him wanting more.

For Adcock, that also means doing his part to help Cameron claim its first spring state title since 1998, which ended a run in which the Yellowjackets claimed eight championships dating back to 1989.

“My favorite memory from high school baseball would be making it to the state tournament last spring,” Adcock said. “It meant a lot to our team as well as our school because it was our first time going back to state in 25 years, and just seeing our team grow and come together was very special.”
