KEYS’ KENLEE COMER…ONE LAST GO AROUND

By Michael Bray

Basketball has been the norm for Kenlee Comer but after the final buzzer sounds on her senior year, she will never pick up a ball again for the Lady Cougars.

One last season.

For Comer that’s reality and she faces it head on.

“Since it’s my last year I can’t leave any regret on the court and I need to give it my all,” she said. “My biggest dream is making it further into the season than we did last year. We made it to our first game in state and took a loss, but this year I want to see us go even further and hold up a gold ball.”

Keys girls basketball head coach, Kruz Lynch expressed just how much Comer means to the team and that goal

“Kenlee has been a four year starter for us and has done everything we’ve ever asked of her and continues to do so,” Lynch said. “Kenlee’s willingness to do what it takes to win played a huge role in us making the state tournament last season. This year Kenlee has shown a lot more confidence on the offensive side of the ball and is having a great year for us. When Kenlee is at her best, we are a really good team.”

The senior reciprocated those feelings.

“I can’t bear the thought of letting them down. My teammates hold a special place in my life,” Comer said. “They have been through the toughest battles by my side and I appreciate every single one of them.”

That bond stretches beyond the court.

“My favorite memory is when we all gather up at one of our teammates’ houses and just have fun,” Comer added. “We get to let loose and have fun with each other outside of the gym. We love to spend time with each other and it makes me so happy to know we all genuinely have each other’s backs.”

You might even consider Kenlee as the proverbial mother for the underclassmen on the team.

“I try to set an example for my younger teammates, specifically for my two babies whom I love so much,” she said alluding to freshmen Brylee Davis and McKenzie Hix.

“I pray they will lead the way like I’m trying to in the future. “

On a personal level Comer said that at the core, it is faith in Christ and family that make her everything she is. The two biggest people in her family that have had the most impact on her are her grandfather and mother.

“He was proud of me no matter how I played and my mom is one of the toughest people I know. In my mind, if I play like her I will be the toughest one on the court.”
