How did it all begin for Kenlee Comer? “My name is Kenlee Comer, I’m 17, and I’ve been playing basketball ever since I could,” Kenlee says. “I always played with my cousins in little league and then eventually was old enough to play at the school.” Her early start has blossomed into a dedicated basketball career at Keys High School, where she plays a pivotal role on the team.
Kenlee’s love for the sport is deeply rooted in family. “My inspiration to play the sport has always been my mom and my dad,” she shares. “Them and my grandparents have always been my greatest influencers by encouraging me every day to strive to be my best.”
Team chemistry plays a vital role in her success. “We have pretty good chemistry,” Kenlee notes. “The team has either grown up playing with each other or playing against each other.” This strong connection is evident on the court as the team works together to achieve its goals.
Kenlee’s role on the team is crucial. “My specific role is to protect the paint and shoot the three,” she explains. “I try to use my length during practice to prepare to use it in the game and shoot daily.” Her preparation involves a rigorous weekly training routine. “A typical week of training for us consists of defensive slides, defensive drills, shooting drills, and getting as many reps in these as possible. We also invite our boys in sometimes to scrimmage.”
A memorable highlight for Kenlee came during an away game at Vian. “I had a rough week that week, and I finally reached the goal my grandpa and I had set for me,” she says. “He told me if I had 15 points, he would give me $100, and I finally got it.”
Off the court, Kenlee values her family, faith, and friendships. “I go to church frequently, and I love spending time with friends and family,” she shares. Looking ahead, her aspirations include pursuing a degree in ultrasound technology and possibly continuing basketball at the college level. “I’d love to play in college if I have the opportunity,” she says.
Kenlee’s journey is a testament to hard work, family support, and a love for the game. “I would like to thank my family, friends, and most importantly my coaches—Coach Kruz Lynch, Coach Hamilton, and Coach Nick Zodrow,” she says. “They have all helped me become the player I am today.”
