Experience will be the foundation for Tahlequah Sequoyah as the team looks to turn a veteran lineup into a successful 2026 season. Head coach Zac Briscoe enters his third year with an upperclassman-heavy roster that includes several players who have spent multiple seasons in the starting rotation.
Nearly every projected starter has multiple years of varsity experience, and many are entering their third season playing in Briscoe’s system. That familiarity should allow Sequoyah to begin the year with a strong understanding of its style of play, individual responsibilities and expectations on the court.
Layla Ridge will provide leadership along the back row as a four-year starter at libero. Ridge earned Defensive MVP honors in the Sooner 5 Conference last season and was also named the defensive MVP of the Wagoner Tournament. Although libero has been her primary position, she has the versatility to move to outside hitter should the team need her elsewhere in the rotation.
McKenzie Wilson returns as another four-year starter and will be counted on at outside hitter. A multisport athlete who also works as an athletic trainer for multiple sports, Wilson brings energy and encouragement to the team. Briscoe described her as a positive teammate who consistently lifts up those around her during practices and matches.
Four-year starting setter Rhyiah Soap will direct the offense. Her experience working with Sequoyah’s returning hitters should help the team establish consistency and maintain its rhythm throughout the season. With Ridge controlling the back row, Wilson contributing at the net and Soap organizing the attack, Sequoyah has veteran leadership at three important positions.
The primary obstacle will be navigating a strong Class 3A field. Briscoe knows experience alone will not be enough against the quality of competition Sequoyah expects to face. The team will need to play disciplined, consistent volleyball to compete successfully and put itself in position for a postseason run.
After finishing 11-20 last season, Sequoyah believes its returning experience and improved understanding of each player’s role can help produce significant progress in 2026.
