Some athletes stand out for their scoring ability, others for their leadership — but for Sallisaw senior Alayna Locust-Trammell, it’s her relentless work ethic and team-first attitude that define her on and off the court. “I want my legacy at Sallisaw to be remembered as a hardworking and dedicated player who always put the team first,” Alayna said. That commitment has shaped her into one of the Lady Black Diamonds’ most respected players and a key contributor at both point guard and shooting guard.
Basketball isn’t just a game to Alayna — it’s a craft. She spends countless hours refining her skills, constantly looking for ways to improve her performance. “To improve my basketball skills and help my team win as many games as possible,” she said when asked about her goals. Her preparation goes far beyond practice, too. “I prepare myself physically by staying hydrated, eating nutritious meals, and getting enough sleep. I also do strength and conditioning workouts to build endurance.”
That dedication pays off during games, especially when she’s reading opposing defenses. “When reading a defense, I look for openings, mismatches, and tendencies,” Alayna explained. Her basketball IQ allows her to make smart decisions on the floor, keeping her teammates involved and her team’s offense flowing smoothly.
While individual effort matters, Alayna takes the most pride in her team’s chemistry and growth. “The team morale has been great this year! We’re all supportive of each other and work well together,” she said. “Our teamwork and communication have improved significantly.” Their focus is clear and collective: “Our team goals include winning the conference and making a deep run in the playoffs. We’re working hard in practice, focusing on our fundamentals, and staying positive.”
For Alayna, the best memories come from moments shared with teammates. “Something fans or outsiders may not know about this team is how close we are off the court,” she said. That bond has translated into success — like her favorite memory, “when we won Area my junior year.”
Off the court, Alayna keeps a clear sense of direction for her future. The 5’8″ senior plans to attend college for nursing or teaching — two paths that reflect her caring and determined nature.
