Poteau’s Ava Zink – Basketball Spotlight – Presented by ProElite Basketball Academy

Momentum often starts long before a season tips off, and for Poteau’s Ava Zink, that momentum was built through the people who shaped her and the work she put in when no one was watching. One of the biggest influences on her journey has never wavered. “Coach Casey Hemphill has always been the coach that was right next to me through it all, not only on the court but personally as well,” Ava said. “He pushed me into believing I could do anything. His advice is always solid, and I am so grateful for his mentorship over the years.”

Her teammates have been just as impactful. When asked who supported her the most, she didn’t hesitate. “A teammate that has been there to support and cheer me on is Brooklyn Garner,” she said. “She was a phenomenal player and definitely a source of inspiration. Whether it was encouraging me from the bench or motivating me during practice, Brooklyn always brought the hype.”

Ava’s support system extends off the court too. “My favorite teacher is Ms. Stockton,” she shared. “Her passion for teaching really shows as she strives to bring out the best in all her students. She has a very outgoing and goofy personality that makes everyone feel welcome.”

Her preparation for this season reflects her commitment. “Working late days in the gym, getting extra training at ProElite Basketball Academy, lifting weights, and eating a good healthy diet!” That work has reinforced lessons that stick with her far beyond basketball. “The discipline, teamwork, and perseverance gained on the court help with navigating life’s everyday challenges,” Ava said. “Experiences and lessons learned have shaped me into the person that I am today.”

When she looks back on her favorite memories, it isn’t a single play—it’s the moments around the game. “My favorite memory I have is riding on the bus with the team to our games. The energy was crazy! All of us girls felt ready to take on anything. It was a really special bond.”

Her goals this year are clear and tied directly to her improvement. “This year I’ve really worked hard on my three-point shot and hope to contribute to more wins for the team.” And she already has a matchup circled. “A match up I am looking forward to is the game against Sallisaw. Their defense is tough, but I think our team can really compete this year.”

Looking ahead, her plans stay rooted in the sport she loves: “I plan to play basketball at the college level and earn a degree in exercise science.”
