POTEAU PIRATES

BOYS

Coach: RONNIE SOCKEY

23-24 Record: 10-15

The Poteau Pirates boys basketball team enters the 2024 season with a younger squad but boasts a roster filled with athleticism and basketball talent. Head coach Ronnie Sockey is optimistic about his team’s potential, citing their depth and versatility as key strengths. “We’re as athletic as most Poteau teams have been in the past, but this group has basketball talent,” said Sockey. “We should be able to play a lot of kids and run different groups in and out without much drop-off. If we can come together as team players, this will be an exciting bunch to watch.”

The Pirates will rely on a mix of underclassmen and experienced players to make their mark this season. Talented freshman Ryder Waddel (Fr.) is expected to play a significant role. Waddel, who showed maturity over the summer and fall, started as a freshman on the football team and is poised to have a big impact on the court. Another key underclassman is sophomore guard Deacon King (So.), a left-handed player with high basketball IQ. King has the ability to score but will also focus on learning to lead the offense, which will make him an integral part of the team.

Sophomore Garrison Whitworth (So.) is a versatile player who will contribute in various ways for the Pirates. “Garrison will play a lot of different roles, from rebounding and shooting threes to posting up and handling the ball,” said Sockey. “He’ll get a lot of minutes in different positions.”

Senior Hudson Burdick (Sr.) is returning from a knee injury that sidelined him last season. Complications from surgery delayed his recovery, but he is hopeful to be released soon and contribute in his final season. Another senior, Rylan Waddel (Sr.), stands out for his leadership and character on and off the court. “Rylan leads by example,” said Sockey. “He plays hard, respects opponents and referees, and does whatever it takes to help the team.”

With a combination of youth, talent, and depth, the Pirates aim to bring an exciting brand of basketball to Poteau this season. Fans can look forward to seeing a team that works hard, competes together, and grows as the season progresses.
