POTEAU LADY PIRATES
GIRLS
Coach: Sara Maxwell
23-24 Record: 13-14
The Poteau Lady Pirates are heading into the 2024 season with a young and hardworking squad eager to prove themselves. After graduating six seniors from last year’s team, the Lady Pirates will rely on a core group of underclassmen and a few seasoned players to step up and lead. Head coach Sara Maxwell is optimistic about her team’s potential, emphasizing the dedication they’ve shown over the summer. “This group of girls has worked exceptionally hard all summer, waiting for their moments on the floor,” said Maxwell. “Even though they are young, I think with the work they’ve put in, we will be able to surprise a lot of people and compete well with every team we face this season.”
Junior Ava Zink (5-8, Jr.) is expected to take on a major leadership role this season. After playing limited but consistent minutes as a sophomore, Zink has transitioned from her post position to a guard role. Known for her athleticism, rebounding prowess, and scoring ability, she is poised for a breakout season.
In the post, sophomore Kinlee Taylor (6-2, So.) brings size and strength to the lineup. Taylor has spent the past few years refining her skills and improving her toughness. Her increased playing time this season will make her a key contributor on both ends of the court, especially in rebounding and defense.
Senior Kiah King (5-7, Sr.) provides valuable experience and leadership to the team. King is a hard worker and a selfless teammate, often staying after practice to help younger players with skills or schoolwork. Despite recovering from shoulder surgery, she continues to set the tone for the team with her dedication and perseverance. King maintains an above 4.0 GPA and is a candidate for National Merit Scholar recognition.
Supporting the team’s backcourt will be senior Mack Thompson (5-0, Sr.), a quick and reliable ball-handler, and junior Gracie Spradley (5-6, Jr.), who offers additional playmaking ability. Sophomore guards Kenzi Williams (5-6, So.), Kennedi Williams (5-6, So.), and Lextyn Soehlman (5-8, So.) will provide depth and versatility. Freshman Emma Walker (5-7, Fr.) and Yulianna Munoz (5-7, Fr.) are also players to watch as they continue to develop their skills.
In the paint, junior Keira Cox (6-0, Jr.) and sophomore Emily Pearson (5-5, So.) bring size and hustle to the rotation. Seniors Briley Bowman (5-7, Sr.) and Traegan Ballard (5-5, Sr.) add experience and depth to the team.
While this year’s Lady Pirates may be younger, their determination and commitment to improvement make them a team to watch.
