A.J. Lyons-Jerrell Jr. is known as the guy you can count on in tough situations. “My role on the team would be the guy that everyone can rely on in serious situations to come make a play, and I prepare for it by practicing like everything is a game,” he said. That mindset has made A.J. a crucial player for Pocola High School’s football team, always ready to deliver when it matters most.
A.J. started playing football in second grade alongside his best friend, Cash Jerrell. Since then, the sport has been an integral part of his life, shaped by watching older players. “Growing up watching the older kids play had a big impact on my game today,” he explained. Now, A.J. is one of those players that younger athletes look up to, as he’s grown into a leader on and off the field.
One thing A.J. is particularly proud of is the chemistry within the team this season. “I would say our chemistry this year has been the best it’s been since I started playing here. We’ve had a lot of players step up.” That strong bond is what fuels Pocola’s determination as they aim for their ultimate goal: “My goal is to win a gold ball.”
Preparation and hard work are key to A.J.’s success. His weekly routine includes practices Monday through Thursday, with game day on Friday, followed by rehab on Saturday, and film and lifting sessions on Sunday. That consistent effort is what helped him achieve one of his proudest moments: holding the rushing record in a single game at Pocola High School.
Looking ahead to the next five years, A.J. sees himself continuing to play football and possibly starting a family. He is grateful for the support of his community, family, and coaches, especially coach Massey, who is not only his coach but his favorite teacher.
A.J. advises younger athletes saying, “Great things only come through hard work and dedication.” It’s that attitude that will undoubtedly carry him far, both in football and beyond.
