Some passions come full circle. For Heavener High School senior Anleigh Hackney, cheerleading started in junior high, took a break, and came back stronger than ever. “I first started cheer in seventh grade and then I was busy with other sports until my sophomore year,” Anleigh said. “When I started back, I realized how much I loved and missed cheer.”
Cheer has been more than a sport—it’s been a connection to her roots. “I have two older cousins who were captain and co-captain at Heavener School. They are both big influencers on me,” she said. “My mom also cheered in high school, so she is as well.”
This year, Anleigh served as a back spot, a role that requires strength and responsibility. “When preparing for backing I lift weights some to keep my strength,” she shared. Her hard work didn’t go unnoticed. “I received the award of Most Valuable Cheerleader.”
Teamwork was a highlight of the season. “My team had a great cheer season,” Anleigh said. “We all had a blast while also working hard every day together.” Practices were consistent and focused. “We practice for an hour every day during our cheer hour in school.”
Not every moment came easy. “The most challenging moment during this season was competition practices,” Anleighadmitted. “I overcame it by working hard and trusting myself.”
For Anleigh, cheerleading taught her more than just routines and stunts—it taught her resilience. “I am most proud of not giving up when things get hard because I would have regretted that more than anything.”
She also understands the value of community and encouragement. “Community support is very important to our team. Knowing that our community appreciates us makes it easier to work hard.”
Looking ahead, Anleigh has a clear vision. “After I graduate from high school, I plan on attending Carl Albert State College to get my basics and then continuing my education at the University of Arkansas Fort Smith.”
She leaves this advice behind: “Hard work and trust in your team is the most important thing while playing high school sports.”
