Wetumka’s Kylar Gordon – Football Spotlight – Presented by Mabrey Bank

At 6’6, senior Kylar Gordon has made his presence felt on the football field for Wetumka. But more than his size and strength, Gordon prides himself on his leadership. “My personal goal for this season is to sharpen my skills for the team in being a leader for them,” he said.

That leadership has carried into the Chieftains’ chemistry this fall. “The team’s morale has been good so far. Everyone picks up everyone. If we make mistakes, the team is always there to pick them up,” Gordon said. “The biggest improvement in the team this season is the leadership and the coaching.”

For Gordon, team goals matter just as much as personal ones. “The team’s goals for this season are to beat Weleetka, win rivalry trophy back and win state,” he said. “How we are going to do that is dedication and hard work. Come together as a team and finish as a team.”

In the trenches, Gordon plays a vital role on both sides of the ball. “The positions I play is left guard and nose guard,” he said. “I look how their line is lined up, and which side the running back is on or the quarterback.”

When it comes to pregame preparation, Gordon’s focus is both physical and mental. “I pray before games, stretch my body out before games and just rest my body until we go play,” he said. “My mindset when I step on the field—nobody on the other side of the ball is better than me.”

What he hopes to leave behind is bigger than wins and highlights. “I just want them to remember me as a positive person that reflects on others and always put smiles on people’s faces,” Gordon said. “They don’t know how much work we’ve been putting in for this season.”

His favorite memory still brings a laugh. “My favorite memory in the uniform is when I got a pancake sack last year and I got up and jumped in the air,” he said. “It was pretty funny. The whole team saw it on film.”

Gordon competes in football, baseball, basketball, and track, and is closing out his senior year with something to prove.
