OFFENSE
The Okmulgee Bulldogs took it on the chin in 2023 going winless on the season but coach
Randy Jackson is hopeful that the lessons they learned and the experience they gained will
work in their favor as they enter 2024 with six returning starters on offense. To make anything
happen on offense you have to start with a strong line and the Bulldogs will have some
experience there with three guys back.
“Zander Thierry (6-1, 240, Sr.), Wesley Warren (5-11, 250, Sr.) and Brandon Simon (6-1, 240,
Sr.) are our linemen and all will be two-way starters for us,” said coach Randy Jackson. “All
three are also part of our school’s leadership team and their senior experience will really benefit
our young team.” Jackson and his staff are scrambling to replace quarterback Nolan Yates who they lost in the transfer portal this year. There are several players who will see action at either wide receiver or
running back for Okmulgee this season including Javon Lang (5-8, 165, Jr.), Mathias Wilson (5-
11, 155, Jr.), Michael Lewis (5-10, 180, So.), and Marcus Jeffery (5-11, 160, So.) who may also
see some time at quarterback. “He is a football sponge and workaholic,” said Jackson.
DEFENSE
Like the offense, there will be six returning starters on defense for Okmulgee this season, most
of them being the same names mentioned on offense. Thierry, Warren and Simon will be on the
line in Jackson’s 4-2-5 defense that plans to dictate what offenses will be able to do against it.
Lang will be back at linebacker and Wilson will anchor the secondary.
“We expect to see huge improvements on both sides of the ball this year,” said Jackson. “We
have a young team that got a lot of experience under their belts last year.”
With Class 2A being broken up this year, the Bulldogs find themselves in Class 2A-1 with
several new district opponents including Bethel, Heavener, Prague, Hugo, Kingston and Roland
along with holdover Kiefer.
