Morris’ Elias Smith – Athlete Spotlight

A single catch can become a defining moment, not because it wins a game, but because it reminds an athlete why he loves to compete. For Morris High School sophomore Elias Smith, one diving reception during his freshman season still stands above the rest.

“My favorite memory was the final game of my freshman year,” Smith said. “I laid out for a ball and caught it to tie the game.”

The play remains one of his favorite memories, but Smith measures success by more than big moments. Long before kickoff, his focus begins with the foundation that shapes every part of his life.

“God above everything,” Smith said when asked who inspires him.

That mindset carries into the way he approaches football, school and the people around him. His favorite Bible verse, John 3:30, reflects that perspective: “He must increase, but I must decrease.”

As a varsity running back, Smith continues to grow into one of Morris’ young offensive contributors. The position demands toughness, vision and patience, but he welcomes the challenge, viewing every practice and every game as another opportunity to improve.

Some of his favorite memories have come from watching teammates experience their own unforgettable moments.

“The craziest thing I’ve seen was a teammate score his first touchdown on his first ever play,” Smith said.

Seeing others succeed is part of what makes football meaningful to Smith. The relationships built through the sport have become just as valuable as the competition itself.

“What I enjoy most about being on the team is the community it brings me,” he said. “My teammates keep me to a standard all the time.”

That standard extends beyond football. The accountability he shares with his teammates has helped shape the way he approaches challenges in every area of life. The lesson sports have taught him is one he carries with him daily.

“Keep moving forward no matter the situation.”

Away from football, Smith enjoys fine arts, names Mr. Avery as his favorite teacher and spends his free time playing video games, lifting weights and competing on the academic team. Those interests give him balance while continuing to challenge him in different ways.

Still, whether he is in the classroom, the weight room or under the Friday night lights, Smith returns to the same principles that guide him. His faith provides the foundation, his teammates provide accountability and his determination continues to push him forward. For Smith, growth is measured not only in yards gained, but in the person he is becoming along the way.
