MASON BOYS PREVIEW
After a disappointing 4-18 season in 2024, the Mason Eagles received a shot in the arm towards recovery when senior Devon Sands decided to transfer from Okemah to finish his high school career at the same school where his father and now assistant basketball coach Clifton Sands played his high school ball and guided many of Mason’s players through their youth basketball days.
“We’re fairly young with one strong senior player and leader in Devon along with a junior who brings size and experience, a hardworking sophomore and a strong group of freshmen,” said coach Vernie Thomas.
Devon Sands (5-11) is that senior Thomas refers to, and he will be the heart and soul of this Mason team. He got off to a slow start at Okemah last year due to a medical problem but made up for it during the summer according to Thomas.
“Devon spent last summer playing as much basketball as he could on various teams and tournaments. His decision to transfer was not made lightly but he felt that his leadership, skills and development as not only a player but off the court as well would be better received at Mason. He will bring a lot to this young team, contributing tremendously on defense while being a force to be reckoned with on offense. He is able to keep his composure when the deck is stacked against him. He is a true leader that plays with great sportsmanship and guidance that will undoubtedly show this season,” said Thomas.
Jensen Smith (6-1) is the junior player who will use his height to dominate and who played a lot of minutes last season. Keenan Mogridge (5-10) is the sophomore the coach talked about.
“Keenan leads by example every day, always pushing himself, staying positive and bringing great energy to the team,” said Thomas. “He’s coachable, consistent and sets a tone that lifts everyone around him. As a sophomore he’s already showing the kind of character that builds strong teams.”
A handful of freshmen will be called on to step in and play a lot and maybe even gain starting positions for the Eagles. One of those is Griffin Vansant (6-3).
“He’s already making a strong impression at Mason. With a soldi build and natural strength, he brings a physical presence to the post position rarely seen in a player at his age and will be a big part of the team this year and into the future,” said Thomas.
Other freshmen that the head coach will be looking at to help out are Zayde Sands (5-9), Nick Trevino (5-7) and Jaxson Davis (5-9).
