Henryetta’s Ailanee Hicks – Softball Spotlight – Presented by Cross Telephone

Softball has always been more than just a game for Ailanee Hicks—it’s been a way to stay connected with her family and mentors. “My aunt and coach Doug started coaching me in softball at the age of seven with my older cousin,” said Hicks, now a junior at Henryetta High School. Her early introduction to the sport gave her an edge, helping her prepare for the competitive high school environment.

Ailanee’s grandmother has played a pivotal role in her life: “My Granny B has always been my role model. She continues to show me how to work hard no matter the situation and to always put God first.”

Ailanee was influenced deeply by coach Doug: “He saw something in me that I didn’t see in myself for a long time.” It was his belief that motivated her to keep pushing, even during moments of doubt. Today, she is an influential figure on the field for her team, often leading by example and offering advice to the younger players. “I do my best to teach them what I know in this game,” Ailanee said.

This season, Henryetta’s softball team was young, but the group showed resilience and growth. “Even though we had a young team this year, we continued to grow and push through the season together.” As one of the more experienced players, she strives to guide the team and ensure that everyone contributes their best efforts.

Ailanee’s commitment to improvement is evident in her training schedule, as she practices every day after school and even wakes up at 5:30 a.m. a few days a week for extra hitting reps. Her dedication has helped her maintain a high batting average since her freshman season.

Looking ahead, Ailanee sees herself passing on the knowledge she has gained to her younger sister and possibly pursuing a career related to animals or cosmetology. “I would like to pass on everything I know in softball to my younger sister, Rylie.”

For now, though, Ailanee remains focused on her goals for the 2024 season: “To come together as a young team and do our best so that we can come back next season stronger.”
