RYLAN CASH-WARNER
The Warner Eagles hope to Cash in on a young underclassman that folks should be watching this year and that’s sophomore Rylan Cash, younger brother of starter Jaxson Cash.
“He’s a 6-4 guard so that gives him a big advantage over a lot of the smaller guys that he faces,” said coach Anthony Porter. “He was our second leading scorer last year with 11 points a game. His defense has improved a lot since last year as he’s a quick learner and starting to pick up on what we’re trying to do. He’s also improved his 3-point shooting and hit three-out of -four in a recent scrimmage. He has all the tools, and we expect a lot of great things from him this season and on into the future.”
Rylan started playing basketball early and has played travel ball since fifth grade including this past summer when he played up on a team to be able to play with Jaxson. Being the younger brother has been a big help to Rylan along the way though there have been some competitive dustups along the way.
“We’d go out and play 1-on-1 in the driveway and there would always be a lot of pushing and shoving and sometimes we’d get in trouble when the pushing and shoving extended into the house,” Rylan chuckled. “But he taught me a lot of lessons as well when I first got into high school like not being scared of the older, bigger, faster kids which was probably my biggest challenge going from middle school to high school and to always keep my confidence up.”
Another change in moving up to high school was going from playing inside or on the perimeter with his height to playing guard in high school.
“I really had to work on my ball handling and shooting and Jaxson helped me a lot with that.”
In addition to his brother, who he enjoys playing with again this year, Rylan says he enjoyed watching Russell Westbrooke when he played in Oklahoma City.
“I liked the energy he brought to the game and the way he played,” said Rylan who expects to also play baseball for the Eagles this next spring.
Though he’s just played for a year he has a highlight that he recalls from last season.
“We were playing Oktaha in our tournament and they were highly ranked. They had been teaming up on Jaxson, so I hit some clutch shots and scored 20 points, and we won the game and went on to win the tournament.”
