LUBBOCK DRAKE
WARNER HIGH SCHOOL
For the past four years most of the attention in the Warner Eagles football camp went to Jace Jackson who did it all. But with the 2024 season on the horizon, there’s a new sheriff and a new name that will be the talk of the Eagles nation. The new sheriff is Cade Shearwood who comes to coach Warner from Stigler and four-year starter Lubbock Drake who now gets his chance in the spotlight.
“Jace was a good football player and deserved all the spotlight he got but now that he’s gone, I know I need to step up as a team leader this year,” said Drake who also wrestles placing third at state last year, plays baseball, powerlifts and runs track for the Eagles.
For Shearwood’s part, inheriting Lubbock Drake has been a pleasant surprise.
“When I got the job last winter, I knew they were graduating a lot of folks, but everyone said, ‘You’ll be all right because Lubbock Drake is still here.’ And after looking at his numbers and seeing him in person in spring and summer practice, I knew he was a stud and is one of the top three players I’ve ever coached.”
Lubbock plays wide receiver on offense where he had just over 500 yards running and receiving last year. But linebacker is where he really shines with 121 tackles last season.
Lubbock Drake has done all of this while dealing with Type 1 diabetes-Type 1 strong is what they call it when an athlete deals with it- and it nearly took his life at one point. Dealing with the issue has been a source of motivation for Drake.
“It spurs me on knowing there are folks out there who thought I couldn’t do athletics with diabetes, and I want to prove them wrong.”
In his last go around as an Eagle, Lubbock says he would like to have 150 tackles and over 1000 yards in offense this season and help his team get to the playoffs. Though he has already received a couple of college wrestling offers, Lubbock is a football guy and says he hopes to play on the college gridiron next year.
