Warner’s Jaxson Cash – Basketball Spotlight

JAXSON CASH-WARNER

The words “lead” and “leader” are ways that describe the contributions of Warner senior Jaxson Cash to the Eagles basketball program.

“He’s been our team MVP the last three years and was our leading scorer last year averaging 18 points a game,” said his coach, Anthony Porter. “He has a high basketball IQ and really leads by example. He takes the time to talk with the younger players and tells them what they need to do. He also helps out with our middle school kids and even a group of fifth graders.”

Jaxson wasn’t in school yet when he was first introduced to sports, though it wasn’t basketball that first got his attention.

“I started playing baseball when I was about three on a team my dad coached, and I always played up. I later started playing basketball, but I started off kind of slow. Once coach Porter came to Warner, I started putting in extra work on basketball and started getting better around seventh grade. I like basketball more than baseball because I like the pace of the game, the ups and downs and the friends you make,” said Cash who carries a 4.0 GPA, is on Warner’s leadership team, and is in the National Honor Society and the chess club. And he has a special place for leadership in his heart.

“I think a good leader is someone who leads by example and can get the team to trust in him. That means performing well on the court yourself while getting the rest of the team involved and encouraging them along the way. I do that by staying late with them after practice, rebounding for them while they work on their shot, giving them rides home when they need them and just being someone they can look up to like a big brother.”

One of his big role models is NBA player Russell Westbrooke.

“I like the energy he plays with and his swagger and passion and how good a person he is on and off the court and I’ve tried model my game after him.”

A highlight of his time at Warner came for Jaxson during his sophomore season in basketball.

“We played Howe in the area tournament, and we were the underdogs. It was quite a defensive game, but we pulled out the win and went on to the state tournament.”

After high school Jaxson will play college basketball with current offers in hand from Heston College in Kansas and Crown College in Minnesota.
